Search engine optimization, commonly referred to as SEO is a process used to improve a website by constant modifications and various tactics for appearing in the search results. As stated by Guest post experts, The goal is to improve the performance of a site in search results. SEO is not a new thing in the modern digital era. It has been in existence for a longer time and has a great history since its development up to date.
In 1991, SEO was welcomed to the World Wide Web. This came after Tim Berners-Lee shared World Wide Web, the first browser ever. Web pioneers later designed a code library that enabled participants to create their web servers and browsers. In 1994 Eric Ward pioneered link building. Link building started working before Google considered increasing search rankings.
In 1995, browsers got graphical user interfaces commonly referred to as GUI. Search engines were born thereafter. Microsoft entered the browser field in the same year. At this period, browser wars were experienced. The innovation boosted greatly the growth and popularity of the web.
In 1997, the term Search Engine Optimization (SEO) was used for the first time. It was initially used as a web marketing agency reference. The agency provided ”search engine optimization” as the main service. A year later, Sergey Brin and Larry Page launched Google, which went ahead to become one of the largest tech companies around the globe. Google took SEO to greater levels.
In 2003, Black hat tactics were used by websites to enable their web pages in ranking faster for keywords that were targeted. The practice was referred to as “black hat SEO.” It included hiding links and texts, duplicating content, and stuffing pages with keywords. In the same year, Google issued the first update on an algorithm. It was codenamed ”Florida.” It was against the websites that practiced black hat tactics. Google continued updating the algorithm in 2011 as well as in 2012, to offer users a better experience.
Up to date, Google has continued to dominate in the search engine space. In ten queries, nine of them go through the Google algorithm. It has also been updating its algorithm frequently. This is a lesson to the SEOs that tricks are short-lived and can only work for a while. Currently, SEO IS both a common and popular term in the digital world.
By looking keenly at the past, there are various things that we can learn. Successful search engines have been focusing more on the user experience as well as the quality of search results. Websites that have been providing useful content and bringing value to their audience have greatly benefitted from this. Tricking a search engine to believe that your website is much relevant is a short-term tactic but not a long-term winning tactic. We should also understand that SEOs are still evolving to the new technological advancement, just as human beings change their behaviors. Besides, we should understand that inbound marketing and SEO are linked up naturally.
