Why these differences in student fees?

CERIUM Summer Schools bring a great number of experts from around the world to Montreal for intensive training sessions. In so doing, we offer those attending our summer schools exceptional access to world-recognized experts and to an impressive diversity of viewpoints. Of course, bringing experts to Montreal also entails considerable costs — to cover travel, lodging and other expenses — that regular Master’s courses do not incur.

Differing tuition rates for Quebec, Canadian and non-Canadian students are in line with the rules of the Quebec Department of Education. (Quebec tuition rates are the lowest in North America, which explains the difference in the fees charged. Still, we make sure that our fees for non-Quebeckers are more than competitive with comparable summer schools in Canada or the U.S.)

(The sole exception concerns French students, who are treated as Quebec students for the purposes of tuition fees as a result of the Quebec/France agreement on tuition fees.)

Important Notice for Undergraduate Students

Most of these courses are 3-credit graduate seminars intended for Master’s degree students or third-year undergraduate students. UdeM’s undergraduates (54 credits completed, average of 3,5) may register to attend summer schools intended for Masters students if they obtain the approval of both their academic director and the Université de Montréal department offering the summer school. Undergraduates from others universities may register with only 45 credits completed if they obtain a recommendation letter from their department director supporting their demand. The same principle applies to Master’s degree students wishing to enroll in schools intended for undergraduates.

Credited student vs. Auditor

This distinction has caused a lot of confusion.

The student rate is the reduced cost offered to students on a regular registration, i.e. a student who does not want or can’t be credited for the course. These fees are payable to CERIUM and the student will have no record of having completed the course in his University. In that case the student is NOT registered with the University for his participation to a summer school. It’s the equivalent of student rate when you go to the movies.

Auditor: The student who is enrolled in one or a few courses without seeking a certificate or other diploma or degree. He must take examinations and participate in the work, in which case he receives a certificate of study. To qualify for independent student status, one must have adequate training to follow the chosen class. The student who takes a course as an independent student may subsequently be granted this course within a program if he is admitted as a regular student. To register, students must report to the Faculty.

Here are the steps to follow. For details, visit the "Guichet étudiant" of Université de Montréal.

Students wishing to take a course as an auditor must report to the department offering the course for permission to follow the desired course. Subsequently, the student must report to the Registrar for verification of documents provided and estimated fees. A copy of the receipt for this transaction will be requested by Cerium as proof of payment.

Note: in this case, cerium can’t issue a receipt. The University will automatically provide a T4.
