Making sense of a changing planet : Sixty experts tell you how
The International Studies Center of the Université de Montréal , in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of Law, is pleased to announce that it will be offering in 2008 six Summer schools touching on some of the most important developments in the world today: alternative views on today’s Africa, the rise of China, the state of Peace operations and of International Environmental Law, the middle East beyond conflict and the United States after Bush. Each six-day course is given by a dozen of the best experts in the field. The Schools are intended for citizens interested in international affairs, members of NGOs, civil servants, journalists, business people, graduate students and, under conditions, undergraduates. The United States after Bush : Perils and Promises
June 30th to July 5th
This summer school will explore the state of social and economic affairs in the United States following the Bush administration’s two terms in office, with analysis of themes that will likely dominate the next presidential election. the course is given by 12 experts and is under the direction of Professor Pierre Martin, director of the Chair in American Political and Economic Studies, U. of Montreal. The Middle-East Beyond Conflict : Context, Dynamics and Outlook
July 1st to 6th
Associating Middle East with conflict is almost automatic, although the connection is rarely explored in depth. What are the causes and consequences of the conflicts and what are their fundamental dimensions? What are the possible solutions and which ones are feasible? This course is given by ten experts with Professor Marie-Joelle Zahar (ScPo, UdeM) and Alain Dieckhoff(CERI, Paris). Africa, not as "Dark" as You Think

The aim of this summer school is to deconstruct what Georges Coutarde has called “The Africa of conventional ideas.” It hopes to overcome the distortions induced by the media, which show Africa as a passive victim of war, famine, poverty and AIDS, and to offer alternative, comprehensive and objective views on contemporary developments on the continent. China Risen: How it changes and changes us
July 8th to 13th
Gathering sinologists and experts from Beijing, Paris and Quebec, the summer school on China aims at offering participants a global understanding of the transformation of today’s China and an appraisal of its impacts on the Western world.The direction of the school in 2008 will be ensured by Zhiming Chen, assistant professor, Department of Political Science, U. de Montréal, with the support of the well-known China expert Jean-Philippe Béja, senior researcher at the CERI, in Paris.
