Pluralism and Radicalization: Understanding the trajectories of Islam and the Muslims’ experiences
from Monday, June 28th to Saturday, July 3rd 2010


Through a sociological perspective, this six-day course will provide a depth of knowledge about the development, present state, and pluralistic nature of Muslim societies in Africa, Asia and in the Middle East, as well as Muslim minorities in Europe and North America. There is a French version of this course.


This course is intended for concerned citizens, members of NGOs, public office holders, diplomats, journalists and business managers. For students wishing to obtain course credits, this three-credit graduate course is being offered by the sociology department of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (SOL6940). Undergraduate students may also register on specific conditions.


Among the topics covered:

- Muslim minorities in non-Muslim societies, such as Europe and North America

- Islamic law and equality between men and women

- Muslim societies in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East

- Religious issues and foreign policy

- Representation in Islam

- A plurality of meanings: the many ways of being Muslim and living Islam
