Jean-Philippe Thérien

Jean-Philippe Thérien is Professor in the Department of Political Science of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the Université de Montréal. An expert in international relations, his fields of interest include international institutions, North-South relations, and inter-American politics. Most of his research has focused on foreign aid policies, and on the role of large international organizations (UN, IMF, WTO). He is currently conducting two research projects on the growing concern of multilateral institutions over poverty issues, and on the role of the Organization of American States in the inter-American system.

Biographical notes

Jean-Philippe Thérien is Professor in the Department of Political Science of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the Université de Montréal, and Assistant Scientific Director of CÉRIUM.

An expert in international relations, his fields of interest include : international institutions, North-South relations, and inter-American politics. Most of his research has focused on foreign aid policies, and on the role of large international organizations (UN, IMF, WTO). He is currently conducting two research projects on the growing concern of multilateral institutions over poverty issues, and on the role of the Organization of American States in the inter-American system.

Author of some 30 scholarly articles, his work has been published in American Political Science Review, International Organization, Global Governance and Comparative Political Studies. He has also written or edited three monographs : Foreign Policy and Regionalism in the Americas (with Gordon Mace, 1996), Une voix pour le Sud. Le discours de la CNUCED (1990) and La quête du développement : Horizons canadien et africain (1988).

Jean-Philippe Thérien was a member of the executive committee of the Canadian section of the International Studies Association, and of the Canadian Association for the Study of International Development. He is currently on the editorial board of Études internationales, and on the advisory board of Progress in Development Studies. He is also a member of the Centre d’études interaméricaines of the Institut québécois des hautes études internationales (Université Laval) as well as a member of the advisory board of the Institut d’études internationales de Montréal (UQAM).

Jean-Philippe Thérien was the first Director of the undergraduate program in international studies at Université de Montréal (1999-2002). He was also the first Director of the graduate program in international studies (2001-2003).

After studying Political Science at the Université de Montréal, Jean-Philippe Thérien obtained his doctorate in sociology at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (Paris). He taught at the Institut d’études politiques de Bordeaux before joining the Department of Political Science at the Université de Montréal.
