Case Study : The African Great Lakes Region

This session will explore the specific constraints of conflicts over natural resources and their links with peace operations. With this goal in mind, two cases will be dealt with : (1) the second Liberian war and UNMIL ; and (2) the second Sudanese civil war and UNMIS. These two cases serve to illustrate the different problems associated with alluvial diamond deposits and petroleum, respectively.
